Organization: The Cape Town Holocaust Centre was founded in August 1999.
Organization’s biography: The Cape Town Holocaust Centre is the first Holocaust center in Africa and houses a permanent exhibit of the Nazi Holocaust. The display includes text, archival photographs and film footage, documents, multimedia displays and recreated environments. The center conducts educational programs for schools, teachers and adult groups.
Mott grants through 2009: One grant for $50,000 since 2008.
What the Holocaust Centre is doing during the World Cup: We’re hosting an exhibition of photography by David Lurie, a self-taught photographer who was born in Cape Town. He won the Pictures of the Year International award in 2004. The exhibit highlights the refugee experience in South Africa. The centre is also focusing on the experience of Jewish athletes in Nazi Germany. Additionally, there will be daily guided tours during the World Cup games.
My most meaningful place in South Africa: I hold a special place in my heart for Mpumalanga province, which boasts fantastic landscapes and wildlife, as well as some of the friendliest and most generous people I have met in this country.
