Organization: The Institute for Healing of Memories was created in 1998.
Organization’s biography: The Institute for Healing of Memories was created to contribute to the healing of individuals and communities affected by the political conflict and violence during apartheid and to share South Africa's experience of dealing with its past with the broader international community. The institute's core program is its Healing of Memories workshops, which provide a safe space for dialogue and openness to deal with issues such as reconciliation, forgiveness, dealing with the past, restorative justice, peace building and conflict resolution.
Mott grants through 2009: Four grants totaling $290,000 since 2004.
What the Institute is doing during the World Cup: We had the opportunity, under the auspices of the City of Cape Town, to offer Healing of Memories workshops to people who were preparing to serve as volunteers for the World Cup games and events in Cape Town.
My most meaningful place in South Africa: Table Mountain is for me a sacred and unique mountain at the foot of the continent of Africa. I love when it shines crisply, when it’s wearing its "petticoat" and when it is invisible and shrouded in mystery.
