Organization: CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation SA was established in 2003.

Organization’s biography: CIVICUS, founded in 1993, is an influential global network of organizations at local, national, regional and international levels that is dedicated to strengthening civil society throughout the world.

Mott grants through 2009: One grant to CIVICUS SA totaling $75,000 since 2004.

What CIVICUS is doing during the World Cup: CIVICUS and other partner organizations are working in collaboration on the “Champions for Children Campaign 2010 and Beyond” with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.  For our part of the project, CIVICUS is raising awareness about risks facing children during the World Cup and is participating in the drafting of the communications plan and campaign toolkit. We also are disseminating information about the risks children face and the need to reduce these risks and protect children using a variety of mediums including our website, weekly newsletter, and through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

My most meaningful place in South Africa: It is Newtown. CIVICUS’ office is located in Newtown, which is the center of “old” Johannesburg. Newtown is synonymous with the heritage and culture of South Africa. A venue for brick making, it was known as “the Brickfields.” In1904, the area was set alight destroying everything – allegedly to combat the bubonic plague. The area was re-planned in unbecoming haste and renamed Newtown. It’s a commercial area where vast fortunes in milling, sugar and food merchandising would be made.
