Organization: The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF) was created in 1995.
Organization’s biography: Founded by Nelson Mandela, the NMCF strives to change the way society treats its children and youth. The NMCF develops partnerships and initiates programs that empower and improve the well being of children and youth. The NMCF also promotes the rights of children and youth by raising social awareness and working to change public policy. It sustains these initiatives through the development of a sound financial and knowledge support base.
Mott grants through 2009: Eight grants totaling $2.5 million since 1999.
What NMCF is doing during the World Cup: We launched the Champions for Children Campaign to ensure that children are accounted for and safe during the World Cup and beyond.
My most meaningful place in South Africa: I am in love with the seaside in my country. I just love the feeling of South Africa's sand under my toes. I also love our urban spaces -- the vibe, the clothing, the food. I especially love the way our youth transform urban spaces with their creativity.
