Organization: Women’s Hope, Education and Training (WHEAT) Trust was created in 1998.

Organization’s biography: WHEAT is a Southern African feminist grantmaker that supports women-led groups working to address violence against women and related social issues. These include: economic justice, HIV/AIDS and health, sexual and reproductive rights, young women and girls, women refugee groups, sexual minorities, sustainability, accountability and good governance. WHEAT is committed to empowering women from rural and semi-urban areas in Southern Africa.

WHEAT, in its 12th year, envisions a Southern Africa where all women and girls enjoy their human rights and have access to education, training and sustainable incomes, made possible by promoting a culture of giving. We believe that women are the rocks of society and the key vehicle through whom the well-being of entire communities is increased.

Mott grants through 2009: Six grants totaling $555,000 since 2000.

What WHEAT Trust is doing during the World Cup: WHEAT will be conducting research on the economic impact of the 2010 World Cup on women and then sharing findings with women’s organizations in Brazil.

My most meaningful place in South Africa: Pumla’s house holds great meaning for me. Pumla is a former WHEAT grantee. Her house is in the Samora Machel township near Cape Town. Although she is not a nurse, she works with HIV/AIDS patients – welcoming them into her home for short stays. Pumla nourishes and cares for her patients. She also helps them get on anti-retroviral drugs. Pumla restores their health and dignity. She has four children and a husband who all share one room in their home to make space for the patients. When I visit Pumla, young women come to her house to listen and to learn more about what the WHEAT Trust does. Some of these young women just might be our future leaders. Pumla’s kitchen is a beehive of activity and her tea is as strong as she is!
