Organization: Charles Stewart Mott Foundation was created in 1926
Organization’s biography: The Mott Foundation – located in Flint, Michigan – was created by an automotive pioneer. It is a private philanthropy committed to supporting projects that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society. Mott supports nonprofit programs throughout the U.S. and, on a limited geographic basis, internationally. Grantmaking is focused in four programs: Civil Society, Environment, Flint Area and Pathways Out of Poverty. Besides Flint, offices are located in metropolitan Detroit, Johannesburg (South Africa) and London.
My most meaningful place in South Africa: “This has to be the village of Ndwayana. That’s where my late grandmother was born in the Eastern Cape, between the towns of Peddie and Grahamstown. I love village life, as the tranquility and simplicity of life there helps me to refuel and to temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of city life. This village holds special meaning because my grandmother was the most influential person in my life – a kind and wonderful soul. Thus, place us very dear to my heart. It also represents a place of warmth, family and love.”
